“My wife told me she couldn’t handle my lifestyle anymore and I needed to choose what I wanted more. Deep down, I knew I was out of control and that previous attempts to clean-up my lifestyle (I had made on my own) weren’t working. I was having suicidal thoughts, crying for no reason and at one stage I said to my wife that I’d done a good job raising the kids and that they would be better off without me.
Troy’s wife thought otherwise. Realising how bad Troy was, she researched how to get him the help he needed and came across The Hills Clinic at Kellyville. They immediately obtained a GP referral for admission. Troy was admitted to The Hills Clinic for the first time in 2016.
“When I was admitted, I felt somewhat relieved as I don’t think I had much left in me. I was grateful to be regaining control of my life as I truly didn’t think I could go a day without using drugs which in hand, fuelled my gambling addiction and lead to depression.
"When I was admitted I was half expecting a magic pill, where over the course of the next few weeks a magic wand would be waived over me and I would be better. But I quickly learnt that if I wanted to overcome my demons I had to embrace the program and integrate the therapy into my new lifestyle. I realised it wouldn’t be enough to just read over my notes before each group session, I had to learn a new language and accept that I would only take away from the clinic what I put in. It was great to finally see that I wasn’t alone and that if I wanted it badly enough, I could beat my addiction and depression.
“I feel empowered now that I have learnt so many new skills. I think most men aren’t taught how to communicate or taught that it’s O.K to be vulnerable. Having a bad day is normal and turning to drugs and gambling is only avoiding underlying problems.
“The Hills Clinic is quite often referred to as the Hills Hilton and I couldn’t agree more. The staff and facilities are excellent and I wouldn’t be where I am today without the ongoing support of both my family and The Hills Clinic.
“To those who are unsure if The Hills Clinic is for them I say, don’t be scared, you don’t need to do this on your own. If you want to regain control of your life The Hills Clinic can help you as they have helped me.
“There will be ups and downs and that’s perfectly normal, that’s part of your recovery so don’t be too critical on your progress, just put one foot in front of the other and don’t give up.”
Following Troy’s stay as an inpatient, he attended the outpatient groups for ongoing support and attends DBT refresher courses. The team at The Hills Clinic would like to congratulate Troy on his dedication and success in overcoming his addictions – well done Troy.
